Public to Access Evans Head Museum’s Book Collection through Richmond-Upper Clarence Regional Library

AN agreement has been signed between the Richmond-Upper Clarence Regional Library and The Evans Head Living Museum for the Museum’s reference book collection to be made visible to the public through the Library’s on-line catalogue.

Once catalogued and online, the Museum’s books will be available for review at the Museum.

Museum President and Life Member Dr Richard Gates said today the Museum was delighted to enter into this important relationship with the Library.

Dr Gates said the arrangement would ensure greater accessibility of the Museum’s collection to the public,  as well as preservation and ongoing development of its reference book collection.

“The public is generally unaware of the material we hold and we are sure the addition of our books will add to the richness of resources available to the public about our local history and the wider world wide context in which it is embedded,” he said.

“Our collection reflects the seven themes of our Museum: World War II history with particular reference to the role Evans Head played; Aboriginal history and culture; natural history and conservation; sport, including rowing; commercial fishing, sand and gold Mining; and Agriculture, as well as the histories of Evans Head, Woodburn and Broadwater.

“The reference book collection supplements a substantial research collection of other materials we already hold on these topics.”

Dr Gates said the arrangement came about as a result of discussions between Museum researcher Jacqui Kennedy and the Library’s Aaron Wilkes, where it was clear there was benefit to the public in making the collection more widely known through the Library network.

Regional Library Manager Gary Ellem said the Museum reference collection complemented the Library’s growing collection of materials of historic interest to the public.

“Our members are avid for local information and we welcome this additional source of information to our ever-expanding offerings,” Mr Ellem said.
