Fishing & Prawning

Evans Head has been a major player in the fishing/prawning industry not only for the East Coast of Australia but also the Gulf and other fishing grounds around the world.  Recently the Museum held a major exhibition about the history of Evans Head fishing which received wide acclaim.  The success of this event led to an invitation to the Museum to assist in the development of the history of the fishing industry in NSW for the new Sydney Fish Markets.

Evans Head was home to the Challenge commissioned by the Commonwealth government to survey the East Coast of Australia from the Cape to Wilson’s Promontory for prawning grounds in the 1950’s. World Champion Rower Evans Paddon skippered the boat in its exploration work.

New exhibitions of our fishing history are planned for the future. We have an extensive collection of photographs and memorabilia from our fishing history and we plug into other major collections and institutions pertinent to our work.
